Our therapy approaches and therapy methods

Providing diverse and culturally responsive therapy approaches in Africa is key for us. We love to ensure that individuals receive care that fits their needs, their background, and their specific experiences. Below are the therapy services and therapy methods we specialize in to support emotional healing and long-term wellness.

Holistic Therapy
Holistic therapy is a whole-person therapy approach that combines traditional psychotherapy with wellness practices. It also integrates complementary and alternative healing modalities like mindfulness practices, stress management practices, lifestyle support, and even culturally responsive healing practices. Our holistic therapy approach focuses on the mind, body, heart, and spirit - resulting in deep healing and long lasting balance.

Trauma Therapy
Trauma therapy is a therapy approach that helps you process and heal from trauma, anxiety, and painful experiences. Distressing and overwhelming experiences can bring trauma, and trauma affects how you feel, think, and relate to life plus other people. Even if the experiences happened a long time ago, their effects can still be present today, and affect your life.

Somatic Therapy
Somatic Therapy is a body-based therapeutic modality that offers practices that work with the mind-body system to address a variety of mental health concerns, chronic nervous system dysregulation and the feeling of being stuck in survival mode. Many early memories and life traumatic experiences are stored in the nervous system and different body parts, rather than in our conscious memory, and somatic therapy helps to release the stored trauma.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a highly effective type of therapy that can help with anxiety, depression, stress management, and changing negative thoughts or behavior patterns. CBT helps you change the way you think, feel, and behave - improving your overall emotional and mental well-being.

Hypnotherapy
Hypnotherapy is a therapy method that uses guided relaxation and focused attention to help someone access the subconscious mind, early memories, and suppressed emotional imprints. Many of our thoughts, behaviors, patterns, and emotional reactions are shaped by our subconscious beliefs. Hypnotherapy helps us explore and heal all these thoughts, emotions, and beliefs stored in our subconscious minds.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a therapy method that uses bilateral stimulation (eye movements, tapping, or sound) to process and heal distressing memories. When a distressing event occurs to you, the brain may not fully process the experience. As a result, memories can remain "frozen" or "stuck" in the nervous system and continue to trigger anxiety, fear, emotional overwhelm, and other physical reactions.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) works on helping you develop psychological flexibility. Instead of focusing on your negative thoughts or feelings, ACT helps you to be present with them, accept difficult experiences without being overwhelmed, and take meaningful action based on your personal values. You learn to stop getting stuck or irritated by unhelpful patterns and begin focusing on actions that support the life you want to live.

Spiritual Therapy
Spiritual Therapy is a therapy approach that heavily considers the spiritual aspects of life and being human when treating other mental health or life challenges. Spiritual therapy integrates traditional talk therapy with exploration of deeper questions about yourself, the world, life purpose, identity, inner connection and spirituality. Many times, integrating spiritual therapy with our other forms of therapy helps to unearth and treat the root cause of your struggles, not just your symptoms.

Testimonials

What our clients say

"
A safe and supportive space
My sessions with my therapist have been life-changing. From the very first session, she was calm and I felt heard, respected, and never judged. She helped me understand my patterns and gave me guided practices that I still use in everyday life. My life feels much more better, I am more confident and I am able to manage stress and communicate in my relationships. I'm truly grateful for the support.
"
Professional and holistic
What really stood out most to me was the holistic approach. The therapy sessions went beyond just talking and we explored mindfulness, grounding practices that were even more beneficial for my physical well being. I also liked the practical coping tools, they made it easier for me to handle everything I was going through. I appreciate how personalized everything felt and always left sessions feeling lighter and more empowered.
"
Safe support during a difficult season
I reached out during a very challenging time in my life, unsure if therapy would help me in any way and I am so glad I did! The guidance and compassionate support I received from my therapist made things less heavy. I felt safe enough to open up at my own pace, and I've learnt a lot about myself, my patterns, and why I felt the way I did. Honestly, therapy opened my eyes, and I've grown in ways I didn't think were possible. I highly recommend their services to anyone considering therapy.
FAQ

FAQ'S

What is therapy
Counselling and psychotherapy are umbrella terms that cover a wide range of talking therapies. They are delivered by trained practitioners who work with people over the short or long term to help them bring about effective change and enhance their resilience and wellbeing
How long does therapy usually take?
How long therapy takes varies from person to person. Some individuals benefit from short-term support over 12 -14 sessions, while others choose longer-term therapy for deeper work. During your intake process, we will discuss your needs + goals and create a plan that feels comfortable and realistic for you.
Do you offer online therapy sessions in Africa?
Yes, we offer secure online therapy sessions to any African country for clients who prefer remote support or have busy schedules. Online therapy provides the same professional care and healing as in-person sessions, with added flexibility and convenience. With online therapy we are able to assist clients in any part of Africa - no matter their location or busy schedule.
Do all therapists work the same way?
There are many different approaches in understanding the way humans think, feel, behave, & live, and thus bringing different ways of healing. This means that not all therapists work the same way. There are several main approaches used in the world of psychotherapy today to solve problems and adopt a healthier approach to living. Most of our therapists mix various techniques, methods, and theories that they are good at to bring healing. This approach of working is what we call holistic or integrative therapy especially since it supports the body, mind, and spirit. The type of therapy to be used depends on the issue or challenge being solved, and also what you as the client feel comfortable with.
What happens if I don't go for therapy
Choosing whether to begin or not to begin therapy is a very personal decision. However, for some reason, all human beings carry wounds from the past - wounds that can be deeply embedded in the mind, body, and spirit. These wounds become the operating systems our lives operate from, affecting our present and our future. In some cases, the wounds are transferred from one generation to another, with each generation blaming the last. But the only way we can all free ourselves is by taking responsibility for our own healing.

Also, when emotional challenges remain unaddressed, they start affecting other areas of your life, such as relationships, family, work, or overall well-being. They can sometimes bring addiction, or undesired behaviors that may end up affecting your whole life.

Therapy provides a supportive space to process emotions, build resilience, and prevent unhelpful patterns from continuing. There is no pressure though, only seek support whenever you feel ready.
What happens in the first therapy session?
The first session is usually focused on getting to know you. We will discuss your concerns, your goals, and what you hope to gain from therapy. You'll also have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have about the process and treatment plan. This session helps us understand your needs and ensures you're matched with the right therapist and approach before actual work begins.
What types of therapy do you use?
The types of therapy we will use vary depending on your individual needs. These may include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), trauma-informed approaches, somatic practices, mindfulness-based techniques, and other integrative therapy methods. At Normalize Therapy, we are always aiming for whole person healing, so we carefully match the approach to your goals and personal journey.
